Sports Rotation

What a beautiful day for sports rotations!

Every Tuesday we have Sports Rotations in the afternoon block. During this time we have professional coaches and our own student Sports Coaches take us for a variety of sports. They teach us the basic skills of their sport and we get to play fun games. It is an awesome opportunity for us to try new sports!

This term we are playing Badminton, Football, Hockey, Golf, Tennis, Basketball, Games and Circuits.

COLAB love being fit active!

At Badminton we learned the backhand and forehand lift. This is our amazing coach Sandra modelling the forehand lift with the racquet leg forward and Spiderman wrist.

Impact Project Practice Pitch

In Term 2 we are getting the opportunity to do an Impact Project. Before we can start we have to 'pitch' our idea for an Impact Project to our teachers (like Dragons Den). As we have never had to 'pitch' an idea before we got to practice in groups.

Firstly we watched a video of Mr R pitching his idea for an Impact Project. Whilst it was funny it modelled for us how to 'pitch' an idea.

Then we watched a video about Keoni following his Moonshot through from start to finish. It was really interesting watching the process and it highlighted how his project has an impact (there are more resources about the Impact Project at the top of our blog).

Then we brainstormed some problems within our class and got into small groups to come up with Moonshot solutions for them. We then put together our pitch and practised it before we got to pitch it to our class and teachers. Then they asked us questions and gave us feedback.

COLAB TARGET

In COLAB we have been building a target for our learning. It isn't a normal target or an archery target, it is a learning target. On the first two days at school we were in groups and did activities about; Knowing, Managing and Designing Learning, Growth Mindset, Creativity, Collaboration and Inquiry.

The activities were:
CREATIVITY: The Paper clip challenge. We had to come up with new uses for a paper clip and then pitch our idea to the rest of our group.
COLLABORATION: Breakout Edu. In our group we had to work together to solve the clues to hep Hohepa and Barry escape from the Beehive basement.
GROWTH MINDSET: We read a range of texts about Growth Mindset, then share our new learning in anyway that we wanted in a small group.
KNOWING, MANAGING & DESIGNING LEARNING: We did a learning survey about ourselves as a learner, then we had to come up with some solutions and give advice on some different learners scenarios.
INQUIRY: We were introduced to the idea of moonshot thinking to come up with solutions to problems. We also looked at some different ways that people communicate their learning to give us some ideas for communicating our thinking.

We had heaps of fun and learned heaps during the activities.

The next day we wondered why we had done it. Then the teachers showed us a picture of a target with all of the headings around it. There were four layers; red, orange, yellow and green. The target is going to help us to be successful and think about what we need to work on.
There is also a ? segment. This is because if we come up with something we think is missing then we can add it in throughout the year.

In groups we used everyone's reflections from the activities to co-construct what we would be able to do for each segment at each colour. We have written some statements to show a progression. We will be able to set some goals for what we need to work on.

ePro8 Semi-finals

After the triumph of making the Regional Semi-finals CSNS Lads and CSNS Trial & Error had a 3 hour training session on the last Sunday of the holidays. We started off by doing some collaboration team building challenges, including the Human Knot and Pass the Hula Hoop. These were a lot of fun and forced us to work together, we even held hands!

Then we had two and half hours of challenges, which simulated the EPro8 Challenge. The challenges were hard but both teams managed to complete at least one task.

William, Blake and Caleb hard at work building.
As we entered the PNINS Hall we were all excited! The hall was set up with 16 stations and all the other schools were looking through the stations to see what they could use to solve the challenges. After Kelvin gave the instructions we were off. Both teams managed to rack some points by completing some of the challenges.

With 20 minutes to go CSNS Trial & Error were leading and CSNS Lads were in 6th place. All of the stations were hectic with teams trying to complete their last tasks. In the end we had to wait until prize-giving to hear the final placings.

CSNS Trial & Error came 3rd overall and qualified for the Regional Finals. CSNS Lads came 7th place and were 20 points off making the top 5!

Breakout Edu

As part of building our COLAB Target we got to take part in a Breakout EDU. For most of us this was our second Breakout as we did one last year about Star Wars.

When we entered the Workshop we saw a screen with a Breakout EDU logo and sound blasting. There was lots of ANZAC related material on the walls so we quickly worked out what the Breakout was going to be about!

We had to work together to free Hohepa and Barry out of the basement of the Beehive. The clues were hard to crack but we persisted and slowly started to find keys and open locks.

The Breakout was a lot of fun and it definitely highlighted the importance of collaboration!

A few days later we got to do a Kahoot on the history of the ANZAC's! This showed us that we had learnt a lot. Some of us even beat the teachers!

BOOM! We broke out!

EPRO 8 - Regional Heats

Regional Heats:

On Wednesday of Week 6 a few lucky Colab kids got to compete in the ePro 8 Challenge against other schools.

There were four CSNS teams;
CSNS Trial and Error: Holly, Nina, Ryan and Saem
CSNS Lads William, Caleb, Tom and Blake
CSNS Geek Squad Fran, Eilidh, Hudson and Lachie
CSNS Think Tank (Kate Caroline, Tommy and Teo

Epro 8 is an engineering challenge that puts teams of 4 against each other. It is about working together to complete challenges you have been set. You get a station with tools and materials like metal rods, wheels, cogs, rope etc. You have to use them to create something that solves a problem. When you have finished a challenge you press a big red button which blasts out a really loud song and the Kelvin (who invented and runs ePro8) checks your creation. If you have solved the problem you get the designated points.

In the end two of our teams got through to the semi finals. CSNS Lads who came 3rd and CSNS Trial And Error who came 4th!

Inquiry Presentations

At the end of our Term 1 we shared our Inquiries into Citizenship. We followed the Inquiry Process to get to the communicate stage and we were excited to share what we had found!

Presentations ranged from speeches about the roles of City Councillor to a presentation outlining how Steven Adams gives back to New Zealand to why you need to be a Digital Citizen.

Kids communicated their Inquiries in a variety of ways (multimodality at its best!), including slide presentations, speeches, iMovies, and songs.

RIPPA Rugby Tournament

In Week 10 we had 13 COLAB kids go to the Regional RIPPA Rugby Tournament at The Arena. There were 32 teams competing for the trophy. CSNS had two team, CSNS Black and CSNS White.

After the round robin Pool stage both of our teams made the Quarterfinals. CSNS White lost a close quarterfinal to Colyton but can be proud of their performances! CSNS Black won their quarterfinal against Somerset and beat Colyton in the semifinal to make the final against Riverdale School.

The final was close to begin with but as the game went on CSNS Black ran away with it to win 9-3! They will go to Wellington to compete at the National RIPPA Rugby Tournament.

Lit Quiz

This year College Street competed for the first time ever in the Manawatu Kids’ Lit Quiz Heats.
The two College Street teams (College Street A and College Street B) were made up of Year 6 students:

COLLEGE STREET A:

Tom Brown
Madeleine James
Eilidh Mackay
Eva Mackenzie

COLLEGE STREET B:

Lachie Brownlie
Pippa Kaiser
Cici Sun
Holly Mason

How the Lit Quiz works:

You get 10 categories with 10 different questions in each. These were the categories:

  • Furniture

  • Glorious food
  • Hair
  • Kidnappers
  • Heroes
  • Journeys
  • Gods and Goddesses
  • Legends
  • Kings and Queens
  • Illustrators

Madeleine James, Eilidh Mackay and Tom Brown from College Street A, realising they had the correct answer

Kids from schools all across the Manawatu competed to answer the questions. In the bonus question round, they even gave out Whitcoulls vouchers, Stationery packs and $5.00 notes.

College Street A and College Street B tied, but still had to fight to the death to win the title of the best Year 6 team with a question about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. College Street B answered the question quickly and correctly so they got rewarded four books.

Congratulations to Palmerston North Intermediate Normal A and B, who got 2nd and 3rd. But the big winners of the day were Ross Intermediate, who took home the title of the Manawatu champions, as well as a copy each of 1001 Questions & Answers About Absolutely Everything and they get to go to The Nationals down in Wellington! Fingers crossed they go to the Internationals in Toronto, Canada.

(Left) Ana Faville, Krissie Beardsley, Jake Cook and Carly Atkin (team captain).

They also got a $160 cheque to spend on books and flights to Wellington.
So, as you can see, the Manawatu Kids’ Lit Quiz was a BIG success and to sign off, we say:
GOOD LUCK ROSS INTERMEDIATE!!!!!!
